Description
Procedure: Application of Progressive Discipline
Objective:
This procedure is intended to assist in the handling of discipline. It represents the principles by which the company will deal with misconduct by its employees. Discipline shall provide instruction and encouragement towards developing employee self-discipline.
The role of the supervisor (the immediate supervisor of the employee being disciplined – the title may be “supervisor”, “foreperson”, “manager”, “director”, etc..) is to set expectations, provide the tools or training and to evaluate the performance of employees under their direct supervision. When employees fail to meet the expectations, standard of conduct or commit an offence against the reasonable business interests of the company, they are to be disciplined. The term Progressive Discipline describes the process by which a supervisor endeavours to correct the behaviour of subordinates.
The corrective approach dictates that the employee be aware of the reasons for and the hoped for results of the discipline, and understands that discipline flows from his/her actions and not from any personal animosity on the part of the supervisor.
If discipline is administered properly, it will make the best use of the company’s resources, benefit the business process, develop management credibility with staff, minimize complaints and minimize potentially expensive litigation. In the event of legal action, properly administered discipline will place the company in a good position to protect itself (and the supervisor) from allegations of unfair or discriminatory behaviour.
